“Where do you come from?” asked the merchant.
“From Bārānasi, sir.”
“Who is your father?”
“The treasurer of Bārānasi.”
“What brings you here?”
“My father has sent you this message,” said Katāhaka, handing him the sealed letter.
After he had read the letter, the merchant exclaimed, “This is splendid!”
The merchant gladly arranged the marriage between his daughter and Katāhaka and set the young couple up in grand style.
Enjoying his new affluence and privileged position, Katāhaka began to give himself airs. When he sat down to a meal, he would invariably say, “This food is so provincial.” Whenever he received new clothes, he complained, “These provincials have no taste and no sense of fashion.”
